What Is Thermal Imaging?
No touch, no radiation, no worry
Thermal imaging is a non-invasive, radiation-free scan that detects heat and inflammation—early signs that may indicate developing breast cancer or other underlying health conditions. Because cancer cells and other pathologies often grow and spread before structural changes appear, thermography can be a useful tool for early detection and ongoing health monitoring, complementing other screening methods.

Think of your thermal image like a fingerprint—these are both unique to you and will stay consistent without change over time. By creating a detailed visual map of your body’s heat pattern, thermal imaging helps identify areas of inflammation, changes in circulation, or other pattern changes that might signal underlying health issues. With a stable baseline pattern, future scans can then be compared, making it easier to detect subtle changes early—before symptoms appear. Remember, early detection of breast cancer is the key to survival for all ages. Thermal imaging is a valuable part of a comprehensive breast health evaluation program that all women should take advantage of.

Scan early, stress less
Our Services
Every service includes an imaging session with our certified clinical thermographer, interpretation by medical doctors who have been board-certified in thermology and a copy of your report and full set of images.

Breast Screening
A scan of the breasts to detect abnormal heat patterns that may indicate early signs of inflammation, lymphatic congestion, or disease.

Half-Body Screening
A scan of the upper half of the body to check for abnormal heat patterns related to pain, inflammation, circulation issues, and much more.

Full Body Screening
A head-to-toe scan to assess your overall health by establishing your full body heat pattern.

FAQs
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No. You can schedule a scan directly without a referral, though referrals are welcome.
How long does the scan take and how soon will I get results?
The scan takes 10-15 minutes, depending on the area scanned. Reports are typically available within 72 hours.
Who performs the scan?
Our female thermographers are board certified by the American College of Clinical Thermology (ACCT) in Fort Myers, Florida.
Who interprets the scan?
Gaston Thermal Imaging partners with Electronic Medical Interpretation (EMI), a group of medical doctors (MD or DO) that are board-certified thermologists. These doctors received extensive education and training provided by the American College of Clinical Thermology (ACCT).
Can thermal imaging replace mammograms or ultrasounds?
No, thermography is not a replacement for a mammogram. The FDA has approved thermography to be used alongside other imaging methods—not instead of them. Thermography can detect risk factors and physiological changes that other tests might miss, offering valuable insight when combined with traditional screenings.
Mammograms and thermograms each miss about 15-18% of breast cancers, but they tend to miss different ones. Mammograms tend to miss the faster growing cancers which fail to produce calcium deposits, while thermograms tend to miss the slower growing cancers which fail to produce robust blood vessel growth. Therefore, using these studies together along with a doctor’s examination and regular self examinations provides the greatest probability of early detection.
Is thermal imaging covered by insurance?
Most insurance companies do not cover thermal imaging. We do not file insurance but we do accept HSA and FSA cards. We will provide you with a detailed receipt and a CPT code that you can submit for possible reimbursement. Some clients have been able to get reimbursed through their insurance provider.
Why do I need a 3 month follow-up breast scan?
Thermal imaging is most accurate when comparing change over time. You must establish a stable breast baseline, which requires two breast scans 3 months apart. This helps us establish your unique thermal baseline—like a heat fingerprint. The three month interval gives time for any physiological changes, such as new blood vessel growth, to appear. Once your breast baseline is confirmed as stable, you can continue monitoring with annual scans.
Should I get a thermal scan if I already had a suspicious mammogram or lump?
Yes. The information provided by a thermography study can contribute useful additional information which ultimately helps your doctor with case management decisions. It is also instrumental in the progress of any treatment protocol.
What is the benefit of getting a full body scan?
If you’re new to thermography, a full body scan is the best way to establish your unique thermal baseline. It gives a comprehensive picture of your overall health and helps detect subtle patterns early.
Is thermal imaging only for women?
No—thermal imaging is for everyone. While it’s FDA approved for breast health, anyone can use it to monitor their overall health.
Can I get a thermal image if I have implants or have had plastic surgery?
Yes—thermal imaging is completely safe for those with breast implants or a history of plastic surgery. Because the scan detects heat patterns on the surface of the skin, it doesn’t interfere with implants or surgical changes. In fact, it can be especially useful for monitoring inflammation, scar tissue, or changes around implant areas—without any risk of damage or discomfort.
Do I have to take my clothes off for this service?
Yes—for accurate imaging, you will be asked to disrobe down to your underwear. For breast studies specifically, the chest must be fully exposed, as the scan must capture the entire breast area without obstruction. You can usually keep your speedo-style underwear on, depending on the area being imaged. The session is completely non-contact, and your technician will prioritize your privacy and comfort throughout the process.
How do I prepare for my thermographic scan?
Preparing for your scan is crucial to the accuracy of the results. Do not have any physical therapy, electromyography, or chiropractic work the same day as your thermography appointment. Do not smoke or participate in vigorous exercise 2 hours before the test. Do not use any lotions, liniments or creams the day of your scan. Avoid strong sunlight exposure the day of your appointment. We will email you with detailed information & paperwork before your scan.
